These are sweet dessert wines from the Tokaj wine region of Hungary.
They usually are blends of different varieties but are always made of wine bunches affected by noble rot.
In many cases, the main variety is the Furmint (in fewer cases, Hárslevelű or Muscat Lunel), and there are rare cases when other autochthonous types play the prominent role.
Good to know about Essencia, Aszú and Szamorodni!
Tokaji Aszú and Szamorodni always come in 0,5 l bottles (sometimes even smaller).
Essencia filled in 0.375 bottles.
If you have a bigger bottle (0.75 l) then probably you have a dry Tokaj wine.
Szamorodni has a dry version which can cause disappointment if you are looking for a sweet one.
Dry, red blend produced in Eger and Szekszárd wine regions, elegant wines with vivid acidity and with medium or full body.
Bulk red wines were exported to the countries of Eastern Block before 1990 as “Bull’s Blood” from Eger (Egri Bikavér); thus, the reputation of this wine had declined.
Now we have a very clear and specific regulation about Bull’s Blood Classification both in Eger and Szekszárd.

It is an indigenous variety in the Carpathian Basin.
The main characteristic of dry Furmint often comes from lees stirring, which gives extra thickness, creamy and buttery texture.
The main producing regions are Tokaj and Somló but you can find good ones in Eger and around Balaton.
Furmint was widespread across the country before filoxera.
The main production areas spread out on volcanic soils (Tokaj and Somló), so dry Furmint is regarded as masculine, firm wine.
Kékfrankos is the most planted grape variety and the most popular red one in Hungary.
It is an essential component in Bull’s Blood blend both in Eger and Szekszárd.
It can be great as a single variety bottling.
Why is Villányi Franc so unique that we need to mention?
While Cabernet Franc is grown in many wine-growing regions in the world, it is rarely bottled as a single variety.
Villányi Franc became famous internationally when Michael Broadbent wrote that “Cabernet Franc has found its natural home in Villány.” in Decanter Magazin (2000).
Many international drinkers, writers, and testers acknowledge this statement.
Villányi Franc is a firmly structured wine, with a fuller body, high tannin, and vivid acidity, the alcohol is generally on a higher level, the flavor is quite intense.
They are elegant, complex wines.
The flavors are very ripe black (black cherry, black plum, blueberry) and red berry fruits (sour cherry, ripe strawberry and red current, hip).
Significant use of oak barrels results in black pepper flavor combined with earthy character and sweet spices, dark chocolate, and tobacco.
In general the flavour characteristic is: lemon, grapefruit seeds, green & white apple, peach, white Rezeda flowers and almond.
It is a country-wide variety, both reductive and oaky styles are common.
Good to know about Olaszrizling!
Olaszrizling is the basis of Hungarian “Fröccs” (Gespritzte) culture, particularly during the hot summer.
A tavalyinál több, 80 tétel közül választott idén legjobb tokaji borokat a szerencsés zsűri, mégpedig száraz és édes kategóriákban.
Egyre nagyobb sikerű a Winelovers Tokaji Teszt: évről-évre több termelő jelentkezik ilyenkor, hogy megmérettesse borait a szakmai zsűri előtt.
A legfiatalabb tétel 2018-as volt, a legidősebb pedig 2007-es.
Érdekesség, hogy a tavalyi lista élén - sokunk meglepetésére - furmint helyett egy kabar végzett, és nagyon úgy tűnik, hogy a kabarok csillaga idén sem tervez leáldozni, hiszen egyre több szép fajtabor jelenik meg a piacon.
Plusz egy különleges száraz szamorodnit is kiemelt a zsűri, amit nagy örömmel javasol kóstolásra.
Íme a boldog zsűri 80 tokaji bor után.
“A 2017-es száraz borok nagyon ígéretesek! Több bornál viszont a technológia agyonvágja a termőhelyet és a tokaji jelleget.
Ez az édeseknél is többször előfordult.
Elég változatos volt a kínálat, több tétel is egészen kivételes volt, szép savakkal és nagyszerű eleganciával, ugyanakkor néhány technikai hibába is belefutottunk.
Az érettebb borok ezúttal jobban teljesítettek, mind a száraz, mind az édes borok kategóriájában.
Ez azonban még véletlenül sem oxidált borokat jelent, hiszen úgy mutatnak érett jegyeket, hogy közben mégis frissek maradnak.
Ilyenekből szeretnék többet látni a polcokon.
Összességében izgalmas kóstoló volt, számomra az édes bor kategória tételei vitték el a pálmát!
Azonban meglepően sok volt a technológiailag hibás tétel és néhol hiányát éreztem a sav-cukor egyensúlynak.

A szamorodni egyébként egy kizárólag Tokajban készíthető borkülönlegesség, amely esetében az ép és aszúsodott szőlőszemek együtt kerülnek feldolgozásra.

Indeed, the 2020 ranking saw a clean sweep, with positions 1-15 taken by such wines.
The latter, a relative newcomer to the upper echelons of Hungarian winemaking despite actually dating back to 1973, makes wine in both Tokaj and Villány, like Sauska.
The fact is that this Bordeaux grape, which has often played second fiddle to the more illustrious Cabernet Sauvignon on the broader world scheme of things, makes superb wines up and down Hungary.

From Eger, St. The one dry white to break into the Top 10 of the Winelover’s chart is from Tokaj’s Barta Pinczészet.
Hárslevelű has long lurked in the shadow cast by Furmint, widely considered Hungary’s flagship white, although some of us Hárs fanatics have long campaigned for the grapes to be put on equal footing.
The estate recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and the wines are in fabulous form under the current team, whose labor is now bearing fruit.
This particular wine comes from the vineyard above the winery, where you can find the Terézia chapel.
A Chardonnay puts in an appearance at number 20: Battonage 2017 from the Nimród Kovács winery.
Furmint also pops up as one of the components in the next most highly rated dry white wine: Kreinbacher’s Öreg Tőkék (Old vines) Bora 2018, which also includes Hárslevelű and Olaszrizling.
Unsurprisingly, Kreinbacher claimed the top sparkling wine in the Winelovers 100, with its Extra Dry Magnum 2017, in 77th place overall.
The judges, myself among them, tasted the wines blind using a 100-point system and then ranked the best from 1-100.
